Soil storage & soil cleaning

In Harelbeke, Zedelgem and Puurs, Stadsbader operates an interim storage site for excavated soil and a centre for soil remediation, approved by the Public Waste Agency of Flanders (OVAM).

Contaminated soils are remediated in accordance with regulations and quality guarantees, maximizing our commitment to reuse and recycling.

At our soil remediation centre in Harelbeke, we offer the following treatment methods:

  • Biological remediation

The biological degradation of certain pollutants is optimised by the addition of oxygen and nutrients. However, this technique is only applicable to biodegradable pollutants, such as mineral oils and BTEX.

  • Physico-chemical remediation

Physico-chemical remediation involves the wet physico-chemical extraction of pollutants.

Pollutants tend to bind largely to sludge particles and organic particles, or to dissolve in the wash water. By carrying out a precise separation of the rubble, sand and sludge fractions, the pollutants are concentrated in the sludge fraction and in the wash water, thereby allowing the sand and rubble to be reused.

This type of decontamination is suitable for treating contamination caused by heavy metals, PAHs, PCBs, PFAS and heavy oils.

  • Thermal decontamination

Heavily contaminated soil is heated to temperatures of up to 650 °C in order to remove harmful substances
