Great interest in the sludge dryer in Roeselare during the Open Site Day

During Open Construction Site Day, Stadsbader opened the doors of the new sludge dryer in Roeselare to the general public. As West Flanders’ official opening construction site, the project offered visitors a unique glimpse behind the scenes of a technically challenging and sustainable facility.

On Sunday 31 May, Stadsbader opened the doors of the new sludge dryer in Roeselare to the general public during the Open Site Day. As West Flanders’ official opening site, the project attracted a great many interested visitors, who were given a unique glimpse behind the scenes of this technically complex and sustainable facility.

The day began with a breakfast for invited guests, followed by an official opening ceremony attended by Governor Carl Decaluwé. After speeches by various project partners, the site was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The guests were then the first to explore the site during a guided tour.

The doors opened to the general public from mid-morning. Visitors were introduced to the scale and technical challenges of the project, which is currently in the final phase of implementation. During the guided tour, they were given further details about how the plant works, the sustainable technologies being used, and the impact the sludge dryer will soon have on sludge processing in the region.

The new plant will handle sludge processing and utilises waste heat from a Mirom incineration plant. This means moving away from natural gas as an energy source for the drying process, resulting in a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions. The dried sludge is also given a new lease of life as a raw material for industrial applications. In this way, the project makes a significant contribution to a more circular and sustainable future.

One of the highlights of the visitor tour was literally high up. Anyone who climbed the 120 steps of the scaffolding was rewarded with an impressive view of the site and the city of Roeselare.

As well as the guided tours, visitors were able to enjoy a snack, a drink and a range of activities for young and old alike. As a result, Open Wervendag turned out to be a successful blend of experience, technology and social interaction.

We look back with pride on a particularly successful edition of Open Recruitment Day. The event offered a unique opportunity to showcase the expertise, innovative strength and collaboration behind this challenging project to the general public and to reaffirm what ‘We Build As One’ stands for.
