On 6 October, Flemish Minister of Environment Zuhal Demir opened the "Week of the Forest" at the Malle airport. A well-considered choice, as the domain was purchased by the Flemish government from the Department of Defence to start one of the largest projects ever to remove paving in Antwerp.
Some two weeks before the visit, our team went there at the request of the Flemish Agency for Nature and Forests and already removed 5 hectares of asphalt from the tarmac with the widest asphalt tiller in the country.
160,000 square meters of paved surface will eventually be removed, which should improve biodiversity, cool the environment and allow for more water infiltration.
This project is part of the Flemish government's Blue Deal and will help prevent water scarcity and drought.
