The De Blankaart water production centre in Woumen, a borough of Diksmuide, is being thoroughly renovated. The current and severely outdated plant needs new and improved infrastructure to provide water to the people.
The raw water treated there by De Watergroep comes from the Ijzer river and is stored in the reservoir with a capacity of 3 million m³. From the reservoir, the water is pumped to the treatment plant, where it is made potable.
The renewal of the site is proceeding in phases.
In the first phase, a new after-treatment and high-pressure plant will be built. Thanks to a structured and constructive cooperation between the client, the project leadership team, the workhouses at Dessel and the people on site, the project, with a cost of 5.3 million euros, went very smoothly.
In May 2019, the 8 activated carbon filters, each weighing 21 tons, were installed. The correct and exact positioning of these filters was a true feat!
In the meantime, the assembly of the pipelines is almost complete and the electrical equipment was started. In the workhouses at Dessel, the finishing touches are currently being put on the main switchboard. The control and distribution boards have a total length of 33 m and more than 15 km of cable will power the installation.
The site will supply potable water to the wider vicinity of Diksmuide, Poperinge and Hooglede.
To pump water from the existing pre-treatment and main treatment plants to the new post-treatment plant, the existing high-pressure plant must be converted to a medium-pressure plant. This €1.7 million project was awarded to Deckx Electromechanics and is currently in full preparation.
