The Bertem arch bridge rests firmly on our abutments

Following months of preparation, the new arch bridge in Bertem was moved into its final position over the E40 during the night of 10 to 11 October. The 4,000-tonne bridge was lifted using jacks and transported almost 200 metres to its final location on Self-Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMTs). A technically challenging operation which we successfully completed.

From the construction site to its final location

Since early 2025, we have been working in Bertem on the renewal of the bridge on the Tervuursesteenweg (N3) over the E40. Over the past few months, the new arch bridge was assembled at the construction site alongside the E40. At the same time, the abutments were being finished at their final location.

Work had been building up to this moment for months, and finally the time had come: the arch bridge literally began to move. The 4,000-tonne structure was lifted using jacks, after which SPMTs transported it nearly 200 metres to its final location above the E40.

Moving it a distance of nearly 200 metres may not seem particularly impressive, but the size and weight of the structure, combined with the limited manoeuvring space, made the operation a true precision job. Every movement was therefore meticulously prepared and monitored.

An impressive spectacle

The installation of the Arch Bridge could also be watched from close quarters. From a specially designated and safe viewing area, a large number of interested onlookers came to watch the operation.

The next phase

The installation of the Arch Bridge marks an important milestone, but the works are not yet complete.

Over the coming period, work will continue on the finishing touches to the bridge and the surrounding area. For example, Tervuursesteenweg will be further upgraded both before and after the bridge, and the Hoppinpunt at the car-sharing car park will be developed.
